چکیده

Pulsed-laser desorption is used as a means of volatilizing nucleosides into the gas phase for entrainment into a supersonic jet expansion. These species are then studied in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer by resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization. Using this combination of techniques either relatively soft ionization or controlled fragmentation can be produced. The degree of molecular ion formation is shown to be relatively strong compared to other soft ionization methods such as FAB/MS, SIMS, FD or FI. In addition, the resulting fragmentation produces ions that are characteristic of the structure of the nucleoside. It is further demonstrated that such fragmentation can be used to discriminate between isomeric nucleosides and also between ribose and dwxyribose sugar groups.

A continuous flow probe method for on-line introduction of liquid samples for detection by laser desorption with resonant two-photon ionization in supersonic beam mass spectrometry

A continuous flow probe is used as a direct inlet source for injection of liquid samples into a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer. The direct liquid inlet is coupled to laser desorption as a means of rapidly vaporizing, the nonvolatile sample dissolved in the solvent for entrainment into a supersonic jet expansion. The target analyte is then selectively analyzed by resonance enhanced multi...

Material Analysis and Surface Interaction Studies Using Laser Resonant Multiphoton Ionization

Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (RIS) technique is an ultrasensitive method of detection of atoms and molecules. Application of RIS to material analysis requires an atomization step which is based in our set-up on ion beam sputtering. We present a review of the analytical studies we have performed demonstrating the very attractive potentialities of this method. RIS can be also used to study t...

Selective ionization of 2,4-xylenol in mass spectrometry using a tunable laser and supersonic jet technique.

A supersonic jet/resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization/time-of-flight mass spectrum (SSJ/REMPI/TOF-MS) was measured for xylenols and ethylphenols. Sharp and intense peaks were observed in the REMPI spectrum of 2,4-xylenol, and the wavelength of the peak tentatively assigned to the 0-0 transition was the longest among xylenols and ethylphenols. These results suggest that 2,4-xylenol, designa...

False estimates of stimulated Raman pumping efficiency caused by the optical Stark effect.

One technique for measuring the fraction of molecules pumped to the excited state in stimulated Raman pumping (SRP) is to record the depletion of molecules in the lower state by resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI). The presence of electric fields on the order of 10(7) V/cm arising from the pulsed SRP laser beams is sufficient to shift the line position of the REMPI transition to s...

Design, Construction and Calibration of a Laser Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer

A time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) developed in our laboratory at Isfahan University of Technology is described here. The TOF-MS instrument uses laser as the ionization source which provides an opportunity to investigate the ions formed in laser ablation or desorption. The TOF-MS has an ionization chamber containing an accelerator and an ion lens to focus the ions into a one meter line...
